Examination

The Architect Registration Examination (ARE) is developed jointly by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) in the USA and the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils (CCAC). The intent of the ARE is to evaluate a candidate's competence to provide architectural services.

All candidates must pass the ARE to be eligible for licensing as an architect. The ARE is administered exclusively on computers at a network of test centres across the United States and Canada.

In Manitoba, you must be an Intern Member of the MAA to be eligible to sit for the ARE.

Study materials for the ARE are available from the MAA office.

The ARE is comprised of nine divisions, which may be written in any order:

Multiple-Choice Divisions

  • Pre-Design
  • General Structures
  • Lateral Forces
  • Mechanical and Electrical Systems
  • Materials and Methods
  • Construction Documents

Graphic Divisions

  • Site Planning
  • Building Planning
  • Building Technology
