The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport (TPCS) is seeking a confident and innovative Heritage Architect to join the Heritage Resources Branch and lead the Planning, Designations and Conservation program. As Heritage Architect, you will work with various stakeholders to ensure that the province s built-heritage is protected, conserved and maintained in compliance with The Heritage Property Act and in accordance with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.

Reporting to the Heritage Resources Branch Director, the Heritage Architect will:
Manage the Provincial Heritage Property designation program including researching and developing government nominations for provincial designation;
Regulate alterations to Provincial Heritage Property including developing and advising on preservation, rehabilitation and restoration solutions that are cost effective and environmentally sustainable;
Evaluate and report on the heritage value, condition, viability, rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings and structures;
Provide expert knowledge and advice to Ministry officials, heritage property owners, developers, decision-making authorities, and other stakeholders; and
Undertake or supervise the production of various educational and promotional material to enhance public understanding and appreciation of architectural heritage.

To qualify for this position, you will have a university degree in Architecture, and be a member of, or be eligible for membership in, the Saskatchewan Association of Architects. You will also have demonstrated education and professional work experience in heritage conservation.

As Heritage Architect, you will have a broad knowledge of Saskatchewan s architectural history and be able to identify various architectural styles. As well, a strong working knowledge of heritage conservation principals and practices, as articulated in the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, is required. You will be able to review and interpret contract documents for building projects and have some experience working with the National Building Code. An understanding and appreciation of current trends and issues in built-heritage conservation and management, both provincial and nationally, will also be important.

Excellent visual, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills will be needed when working on projects that are often complex and controversial with heritage stakeholders, including property owners, developers, and special interest groups. Strong organizational skills and the ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects are also required. You will also be familiar with the use of Autocad and basic database management. Given the program s provincial scope, in-province travel and some out-of-province travel is required.

You will have knowledge of:
Saskatchewan s architectural history in order to identify various architectural styles.
Saskatchewan and Canadian Acts, Regulations and compliance documents related to heritage conservation including the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, Saskatchewan s Heritage Property Act and the National Building Code.
Conservation principles and practices including building conservation and construction knowledge
Current trends, issues and stakeholders in heritage resources planning and management and Canadian and Saskatchewan architectural history
Inventory database computer programs.

Experience in the coordination of projects including development of project budget and schedules, space programs, design and construction contract administration.
