THE PROJECT
The Qualico Family Centre creates a transition between the edge of the iconic Duck Pond and the surrounding oak forest. It functions as a focal point and gathering place with modern amenities long absent from the park, including a restaurant, multi-purpose and children’s activity space as well as a fireplace lounge.
The structure, space and materials mimic the rhythms of the natural world, expressing the beauty and power of the landscape. The design creates a responsible, evocative and inspiring building that feels as if it has always been there.
JURY COMMENTS
The arrangement of the building and its irregular façades are playful. The connection between indoor and outdoor spaces is very fluid. The family room is especially pleasant. The material palette of wood, zinc, steel, and green roof all contribute to an architecture that pairs well with the landscape.
