Public review of proposed model code changes

April 29, 2026

The MAA wishes to express its appreciation to Joe Kasprick, Program Manager - Building Codes, Inspection and Technical Services with the Province of Manitoba, for bringing the following information to the MAA's attention - so that it can be shared with MAA members.

The first public review of proposed changes to the 2025 National Model Codes is now open, and the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) encourages your participation in the review.

Proposed model code changes in this public review address several topics, including the certification of prefabricated buildings, modules, and panels; prescriptive energy efficiency requirements for demonstrating compliance with Energy Performance Tier 2; and the following:

  • Accessibility
  • Airtightness
  • Automatic sprinkler systems
  • Drainage systems
  • Fire protection
  • Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • Plumbing materials and equipment

Code users and interested parties are invited to visit the CBHCC Website, examine the proposed changes, and provide feedback.

The public review runs from today until June 22, 2026. The review period is an opportunity for all Canadians to participate in the code development process.

Members of the relevant code development committees will review the comments received and make recommendations on the proposed changes. If approved by the CBHCC, the changes will be included in the 2030 editions of the National Model Codes.

Sincerely,

Mansoor Mahmood and Thomas Ferguson
Co-Chairs, Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes
