Six Month 'GRACE PERIOD' Implemented for 2018/2020 ConEd Cycle

As all registered and intern members will be aware, the deadline for compliance with mandatory continuing education requirements for the 2018/2020 cycle is approaching on June 30, 2020.

A number of the large architectural associations in Canada, whose members often rely on sessions that might be offered in connection with annual conferences, had been very quick to respond to the pandemic; and many of them extended deadlines relative to the current reporting period, either in conjunction with or shortly after notification of the cancellation of various events.

The MAA's Continuing Education Committee carefully reviewed the information that had been gathered from all the other regulatory bodies in the country; and it also carefully considered the opportunities offered by way of the current MAA transcript, for those members who are reporting with the MAA, as well as the MAA's unique carry forward policy (that, to date, has had no cap).

Based on the recommendation of the MAA's ConEd Committee, the MAA Council has agreed to adopt a six month 'grace period' for the 2018/2020 cycle, as it both:

• provides members who are reporting to the MAA as a primary jurisdiction, additional time for compliance, as and where might be required, without penalty; and
• readily facilitates the extended deadlines for those members who have a primary reporting jurisdiction elsewhere and have opted for an equivalency with the MAA.

For those members reporting with the MAA, it means that:

• if you have complied with the 2018/2020 requirements on or before June 30, 2020, you will simply log any new activities after that date within the new transcript that will become available for the next (2020/2022) cycle on July 1, 2020; and
• if you have not complied with the 2018/2020 requirements by the June 30, 2020 deadline, you will have up to December 31, 2020 to do so, without penalty, and would simply switch over to the transcript for the next cycle (2020/2022), at the appropriate time.

Once the 'grace period' ends on December 31, 2020, members who continue to remain non-compliant with the requirements for the 2018/2020 cycle, will be subject to the MAA's enforcement policy; which includes significantly increased financial penalties.

Note: Members who are signed up for an equivalency with the MAA, should pay careful attention to the extended deadlines or grace periods which have been determined by the jurisdiction in which they report their activities. As noted above, the MAA's six month grace period will readily accommodate what has been implemented elsewhere, relative to the 2018/2020 cycle, within those jurisdictions that are currently recognized by the MAA for an equivalency
