Understanding Construction Documents

Description
Understanding Construction Documents (UCD) will provide you with an overview of the various construction documents and how they work together. This session is designed to give you a solid understanding of how specifications are organized and why it's important for EVERY trade on the project to review and understand how they impact each trade price.

In this one-day session, you will focus on construction drawings and how they are organized, including instruction on symbols, notes and abbreviations and what they all mean. You will also examine how drawings and specs work together and discuss what is often missed but must be considered in preparing bids. This course will also provide you with a set of drawings from a recent project and will work through a series of exercises to understand the process.

Presenter
Randy Storoschuk, Sustainable2 Construction Services Ltd.
Randy has more than 35 years of experience in construction, working as a labourer, estimator, chief estimator, project manager and risk manager. He has worked under many contractual arrangements such as lump sum, design/build, unit price, and P3 for building, civil and industrial projects. Notable projects that Randy has worked on include BellMTS Place, Manitoba Hydro's downtown office building, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Disraeli Bridge project. In the early stages of his career, Randy estimated and managed lump sum bid and negotiated projects which included all areas of construction. Randy then moved into risk management where the focus was on request for proposal responses, preconstruction planning and construction document development, while working in a project team environment.

Over the past few years of his "retirement," Randy has been giving back to the industry by mentoring up-and-coming estimators and sharing his knowledge and experiences in the classroom. Randy facilitates a range of courses for the Winnipeg Construction Association, including Estimating, Understanding Construction Documents and Risk Management.
